Tat Meng walking again after crash, thanks minister for support

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Zii Jia’s former coach, Wong Tat Meng, has thanked Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and the National Sports Council (NSC) for their concern and support as he continues to make a remarkable recovery from a serious motorcycle accident.

The experienced 58-year-old coach suffered severe injuries in the crash on Sept 7.

In a Facebook post, Tat Meng thanked Yeoh and the NSC for their flowers and kind words.

“A heartfelt thank you to Hannah Yeoh and the National Sports Council (NSC) for the thoughtful flowers and warm wishes,” he wrote while holding the card sent to him.

“It truly means a lot to receive such care and encouragement while recovering here in Australia. Your support gives me strength to keep pushing forward. I’ll do my best to recover and come back stronger.”

Yeoh later replied to his post, writing: “Get well soon, coach Tat Meng. Praying for your complete recovery.”

In a separate post, Roketto — the badminton academy in Sydney where Tat Meng serves as coaching and programme director — shared a video of him taking his first steps since the accident.

In the clip, Tat Meng can be seen walking slowly with the assistance of hospital staff.

“His grit and recovery are inspirational to us. We hope to see him back on court soon doing what he loves,” Roketto posted on its official website.

“We are deeply grateful to the medical team who help him every day and to the badminton community for the incredible support you have shown him. If you’d like to send him a message, please reach out directly via his Facebook Messenger.”

The encouraging footage suggests Tat Meng is on track to return to the sport he loves most — coaching — in the coming months.
