KUALA LUMPUR: Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei assured Malaysia of their first mixed doubles medal in 19 years after storming into the semi-finals of the World Championships in Paris on Friday.
The world No. 4 overcame India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto 21-15, 21-13 in their quarter-final clash at the Adidas Arena.
It was their second straight win over the Indians, having also beaten them at the Indonesia Open in June.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei, quarter-finalists on their world meet debut last year, will now return home as medallists — the first Malaysian duo to do so since Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty clinched bronze in Madrid in 2006.
The Malaysians will next face either France’s world No. 8 Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue or China‘s world No. 12 Chen Xing-Zhang Chi in the last four, with their sights firmly set on upgrading to silver or gold.
Malaysia could yet celebrate a double joy in Paris if Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin can upset China‘s world No. 2 Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin in their quarter-final later today.
