PETALING JAYA: The Southern Taurids meteor shower is expected to peak from Wednesday (Nov 5) night into the wee hours of Thursday (Nov 6), says the Malaysian Space Agency (MySA).

In an astronomical calendar uploaded to its website, MySA said the Southern Taurids meteor shower phenomena can be observed from Sept 23 to Nov 20, but would peak on Wednesday night, with about five meteors an hour.

“However, the light of the full moon is expected to obscure the visibility of the meteors,” it said.

MySA also said Malaysians would be able to witness the “supermoon” phenomena when the moon enters its full phase at 9.19pm Wednesday.

This is because the moon will reach its perigee, or closest distance of 356,832km from Earth on Nov 6.

MySA also said that during perigee, the moon would cross the Pleiades cluster (Seven Sisters) in the Taurus constellation. It added that several of the stars would be obscured for two to three hours as the moon makes its passage across the sky.
