ISKANDAR PUTERI, Sept 11 (Bernama) — Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) celebrated a goal-fest as they defeated Penang FC 6-0 in a Super League match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium here tonight.
The Southern Tigers, coached by Xisco Munoz, displayed absolute dominance from the start of the game and opened the scoring in the ninth minute through Jairo Da Silva, who headed in a cross from Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi.
Arif Aiman then added the home team’s second goal in the 18th minute before netting his second personal goal of the night in the 31st minute to give JDT a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Joao Figueiredo scored JDT’s fourth goal with a long-range shot after spotting Penang goalkeeper Mohd Khairulazhan Mohd Khalid far off his line, before Jon Irazabal completed the first half with a fifth headed goal in injury time.
Entering the second half, JDT did not ease up their attack, and Antonio Glauder added the sixth goal in the 52nd minute.
The Penang side almost scored a goal two minutes later through Dylan Wenzel-Halls, but his shot was disallowed after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review found the player had fouled the JDT goalkeeper.
The visiting team had another chance through Danilo Sipovac’s attempt in the 68th minute, which narrowly missed the target, while Jairo da Silva also came close to adding to JDT’s tally in the 69th minute, but his fierce shot was saved by the Penang goalkeeper.
JDT made a tactical substitution, with Bergson da Silva coming on for Ager Aketxe Barrutia in the 65th minute, while Arif Aiman nearly scored his third personal goal from a free-kick in the 77th minute, which, however, failed to get past the opponent’s defence.
The match also saw Southern Tigers player, Hector Hevel, being shown a yellow card in the 82nd minute for fouling an opponent.
With this resounding victory, JDT remains strong at the top of the Super League, while Penang continues to struggle to find their rhythm and remain in 11th spot in the league competition that has 13 teams.
