Sultan of Selangor urges leaders to prioritise people's issues over politics

SHAH ALAM: Sultan of , Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has urged those entrusted with responsibility, particularly elected representatives, to stop being preoccupied with politics and focus instead on resolving the problems faced by the people.

In his 2026 New Year message, Sultan Sharafuddin said elected representatives who have been given power and responsibility must concentrate on their duties, noting that a general election will be held before long.

“To those entrusted with power and responsibility, especially politicians in , I wish to remind you that enough has been said about politics. Focus on working to solve the people’s problems.

“Channel all your energy and thoughts towards building tangible development so that the people can live more comfortably, their welfare is safeguarded, and they feel protected by a system that is fair and effective,” he said in the royal address posted on the Royal Office Facebook page today.

Sultan Sharafuddin also stressed that all planning and actions undertaken must be guided by a single core objective, namely the prosperity of the people and the stability of the state.

Touching on flood mitigation, Sultan Sharafuddin said he wanted to see the issue addressed comprehensively, with a clear target of achieving “zero flood”, as the problem has persisted for far too long.

“Seek the best expertise, whether from within the country or abroad. Make use of knowledge, technology and experience.

“Do not hide behind excuses any longer, because the suffering of the people cannot be the price paid for failures in planning.

“I am aware that we cannot prevent storms, typhoons, heavy rain or natural disasters, which are part of divine decree.

“However, I am confident that floods can be overcome if there is a sound system, long-term planning and implementation that is honest and disciplined,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, also extended 2026 New Year greetings to all citizens, regardless of race, religion or background.

“May the new year bring rays of hope, peace of mind and lasting well-being to all.

“Let this new year be a point of resolve to become better individuals, more virtuous and more beneficial to our families, society and the state. May Allah bless this state and all my people,” he said.
