Sultan of Pahang visits surviving crew after RMAF jet crash

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, today visited the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (Kuantan Air Base) in Kuantan, Pahang where the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F/A-18D fighter jet crashed on Thursday night.

In a post on the Kesultanan Pahang Facebook page, Al-Sultan Abdullah was accompanied by RMAF chief General Datuk Seri Muhammad Norazlan Aris during the visit.

The Sultan of Pahang also visited the two crew members who survived the incident at the Armed Forces Hospital (RSAT) at RMAF Kuantan Air Base.

It was reported that the fighter jet was on a routine night training flight when it crashed.

No casualties were reported, as the pilot, Major Mohamad Azhar Alang Kamarudin, and the weapons systems officer (WSO), Captain Mohamad Izzudin Mohamad Salleh, managed to eject from the jet in the 9.05pm incident.

However, the jet was completely destroyed.

The crash forced the temporary closure of the airport runway, which only reopened at around noon yesterday.
