IPOH, Nov 15 (Bernama) — Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah graced the theatre screening of Datuk Lat’s ‘Kampung Boy’ at the auditorium of the Perak National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Complex here tonight.

His Royal Highness was accompanied by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, JKKN director-general Mohd Amran Mohd Haris, and National Artist Datuk Mohammad Nor Mohammad Khalid, better known as Datuk Lat.

After the one-hour and 40-minute performance ended, Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara posed for photographs and interacted with the cast before departing at 10.15 pm.

JKKN, in a statement said the theatre production was presented by MOTAC via JKKN Perak and Pertubuhan Seni Kayangan Perak (PESKAP), in collaboration with the Perak state government and Yayasan Hasanah.

According to JKKN, the theatre performance was a special tribute to Datuk Lat, who is also a Royal Artist, in recognition of his contributions in elevating Malaysian culture and identity to the international stage through his outstanding works.

Mohd Amran, in the same statement, said the theatre production was a source of pride for Perak, as it not only served as a fitting tribute to Datuk Lat but also represented an art project of high value.

“Through this visual interpretation of the realist comic, we hope to instil strong cultural values among the audience, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.

“JKKN is pleased to provide this large-scale platform to strengthen theatre activities and cultivate new audiences,” he said.

The theatre production, which brings to life the iconic comic ‘The Kampung Boy’ depicting Datuk Lat’s childhood, featured a cast that includes Taiyuddin Bakar, Safura Ya’cob, Ilya Senario and Hadi Mikail.

Directed by Ridhwan Saidi based on a script by Saad Omar, the performance tells the story of the adult Lat meeting his younger self and reminiscing about his childhood memories in Kampung Lalang, Kota Bharu, near Kampar, before moving to Ipoh.
