Sultan Nazrin officiates opening of RM430mil Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh

IPOH: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, today officially opened the Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh, a world-class healthcare facility dedicated to serving the people.

Also present were the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim; Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad; Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah; and Sunway Healthcare president Datuk Lau Beng Long.

To commemorate the launch of the hospital, Sultan Nazrin signed a plaque before touring the facility.

Saarani said the opening of the hospital marked a new landmark that not only strengthened the state’s healthcare ecosystem but also elevated Perak’s standing in the national healthcare landscape.

“Today we witness how continuous efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare ecosystem are being realised through this world-class facility developed by the Sunway Group.

“This, in turn, reflects investors’ confidence in the state’s potential as a leading destination for investment and health tourism in the northern region of the country,” he said.

He said the hospital features advanced medical facilities and modern treatment systems that enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient recovery outcomes.

“It also signifies a major step forward in Perak’s capability to adopt and leverage world-class medical technology,” he said.

Saarani said the state government has taken proactive steps to expand TVET programmes in the healthcare sector from nursing to laboratory technology, and from radiography to pharmacy to empower Perak’s youth to become skilled professionals contributing to the state’s well-being.

“With the establishment of modern hospitals such as Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh, new opportunities arise for local graduates to gain knowledge and clinical experience in their own homeland.

“Here, they can build their careers, serve their communities, and fulfil the aspiration for Perak to stand proud through the strength of its own people.

“For the state government, investments like this are not only valuable from an economic perspective but also reflect a greater humanitarian mission ensuring that the people of Perak have access to fair, high-quality, and compassionate healthcare,” he said.

In his speech, Lau said that with the launch of Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh, he was proud to introduce Perak’s first PET-CT scanner and the Mako SmartRobotics system for cutting-edge cancer diagnostics and robotic knee and hip replacement surgery.

He said the state-of-the-art technology, alongside advanced facilities such as the dedicated Cancer Centre and Nuclear Medicine Centre, makes the hospital a hub for medical and healthcare excellence in support of Ipoh’s aspiration to become a Health City by 2025.

“Our commitment here is not only to provide advanced medical treatments and facilities but also to nurture a holistic environment where clinical excellence is complemented by compassion, safety, and innovation.

“With the current capacity of 259 beds and provisions for future expansion, Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh will serve as a hub for comprehensive healthcare and senior living facilities, offering services from acute and specialist care to wellness and preventive healthcare,” he said.

He added that the RM430 million hospital also represents the group’s broader commitment to Malaysia’s healthcare transformation.

“With the government’s emphasis on public-private partnerships, we will continue to support national healthcare aspirations by easing the burden on the public sector and elevating overall healthcare standards.

“In line with this commitment, I am pleased to share that our expansion plans include medical centres in and Seremban, in partnership with Holdings and the Railway Assets Corporation, respectively,” he said.

He said that currently, there are a total of 1,700 beds across Sunway Healthcare Group, and with ongoing expansions over the next few years across its existing five hospitals, the number will grow to 2,400 beds.

“Eventually, with the three new hospitals mentioned, the group will have 3,400 beds by 2032,” he said, adding that Sunway Healthcare Group remains steadfast in embracing innovation, digitalisation, and AI-driven care to ensure patients benefit from the latest technologies without losing the human touch.

The hospital, located along Jalan Tambun here, also offers 63 consultation suites, eight operating theatres, 24 critical care units, 37 medical specialties and sub-specialties, and 41 consultant specialists.
