KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has decreed that environmental conservation and tourist safety must always remain a top priority on the islands of Mersing.
His Majesty said the Mersing islands are among the nation’s valuable tourism assets and therefore require more organised and effective management to ensure the sustainability of their natural environment.
The King said that while tourist arrivals to enjoy the beauty of Mersing’s islands are encouraged, stricter control, monitoring, and enforcement are needed to prevent pollution, safety threats, and damage to the marine ecosystem.
“Recently, I saw on social media posts showing overcrowded tourist boats and excessive visitor numbers. Therefore, biodiversity conservation is very important to continue safeguarding our natural heritage.
“Effective management will not only ensure that the beauty of Mersing’s islands is preserved, but also guarantee the well-being of the people and the sustainability of the nation’s tourism industry,” His Majesty said in a statement to the Royal Press Office (RPO) today.
