PUTRAJAYA: Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has proposed for the jurisdiction of the planned anti-bullying tribunal be limited to cases involving individuals under 18.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the suggestion by Suhakam’s children’s commissioner was raised during a briefing to the cabinet today.
The briefing was delivered by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said after chairing a special committee on tackling bullying.
“The commissioner suggested that the tribunal’s jurisdiction be confined to those aged 18 and below, but this is still at an early stage of discussion,” he said in a press conference.
Fahmi said further discussions would be held to study the scope and mechanism of the tribunal.
He added that Azalina was scheduled to hold a series of town halls and roadshows nationwide, beginning in Kuala Lumpur, to gather public feedback before the framework is finalised.
“The proposal is being reviewed, and input from the public and stakeholders will be taken into account before any decisions are made,” he said.
The special committee also reviewed a proposal to draft an anti-bullying tribunal bill to establish a quasi-judicial body to handle cases, particularly those involving students and children.
