KUALA TERENGGANU: Work at a river sand collection site in Seri Iskandar, Perak, has been temporarily halted pending investigations into a fatal mishap involving a worker last Sunday (Sept 7).

Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) deputy director-general (occupational health) Husdin Che Amat said the stop-work order would be in force until the investigations are completed.

“The work can resume once all evidence has been gathered and the employer gives an assurance on worksite safety.

“Depending on the complexity of the case, the probe may be completed in three months or take up to years.

“There may be cases where we need to send evidence overseas, which takes longer,” he said at the Roadshow on the Guidelines for Psychosocial Risk Assessment and Management in the Workplace at Sultan Zainal Abidin Hospital here on Tuesday (Sept 9).

A 26-year-old man was killed after being buried in soil during excavation and pipe installation work at the site in Kampung Teluk Kepayang, Bota Kiri.

According to Husdin, 1,038 prosecution cases with penalties amounting to RM15.8 million were recorded from 2022 until last July under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) and the Factories and Machinery Act 1967 (Act 139).

He said 2,469 compounds valued at RM6.9 million were issued over the same period, in addition to 36,458 notices of improvement and prohibition, as well as 142,474 directive letters.

“By sector, manufacturing activities accounted for the highest number of prosecutions with 583 cases, followed by the construction sector with 272 cases.

“In terms of penalties, the manufacturing sector recorded more than RM7.7 million, followed by construction with RM5.1 million,” he added. — Bernama
