KUALA LUMPUR:

A Perikatan Nasional MP has called on the transport ministry to stop serving alcoholic beverages on Malaysia Airlines flights, arguing that the practice goes against Islamic principles and puts Muslim flight attendants in an uncomfortable position.

Raising the issue while debating the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today, Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu ) said there was “a clear justification” for action to be taken.

“I’ve seen for myself the dilemma faced by flight attendants, who are Muslims, forced to serve something that is clearly haram in ,” he said.

“Passengers, too, are uncomfortable with the current situation.”

This is not the first time has made such a call. Then Youth deputy chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari made the sugggestion in 2017 after a disruptive drunk passenger caused a MAS plane to turn back to Melbourne.

Hasnizan said his proposal was not about restricting anyone’s rights but about respecting the religious sensitivities of the majority.

“This is not a question of denying the rights of anyone but a question of respecting religion and the sensitivities of the majority of Malaysian citizens,” he said.

He urged the ministry to ensure that alcohol is completely removed from Malaysia Airlines’s flights.
