SPPP To License Private Jetties To Strengthen Maritime Safety At Penang Port

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 (Bernama) — The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) is strengthening its role as a regulatory body at Penang Port by implementing various strategic measures to ensure maritime operations run smoothly, safely, and in compliance with regulations.

Its chairman, Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the Port Resource Centre, Port Authority, Free Commercial Zone Administrator and Trade Facilitator also play key roles in overseeing activities within the port limits.

He said joint monitoring with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) found that there are 38 private jetties within the port limits, with most of them used by fishermen, while the rest are for handling commodities other than marine products.

“SPPP has taken proactive steps by briefing jetty owners on the requirements and guidelines for operating private jetties within the port limits.

“To strengthen maritime governance, enhance safety and operational efficiency, SPPP will implement a licensing initiative for all private jetties located within the Penang Port limits,” he said in a statement here today.

Yeoh said the initiative would be carried out in close collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and several other relevant government departments and agencies.

In addition, he said engagement sessions would also be held to ensure the needs of all parties are met, thereby enabling licences to be issued comprehensively.

He added that he is confident that this initiative would not only reinforce regulatory oversight but also safeguard the economic and maritime security interests of Penang Port.
