KUALA LUMPUR: The Speedy Tigers came back from a goal down to stun defending champions South Korea 4-1 in Group B of the Asia Cup in India today (Aug 30).
It secured the national squad its second win of the tournament and booked them a spot in the Super Four.
Malaysia started badly as they conceded a goal as early as the second minute. Jin Geonhyo scored from close range off a reverse stick attempt that sailed past goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman.
But Akhimullah Anuar Esook did well to equalise off a solo effort in the 29th minute. A minute later Malaysia had two penalty corners but Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan failed to convert.
South Korea were down to 10 men in the 30th minute when Cheon Min Su was flashed a yellow card and Malaysia took the advantage and scored two goals in the space of a minute through Ashran Hamsani (33rd) and Akhimullah (34th).
Akhimullah was on target again in the 58th minute, completing his hat-trick. Akhimullah was named man of the match.
National coach Sarjit Singh, whose men outplayed Bangladesh 4-1 yesterday, was all smiles after the match.
“Although we were down 1-0, my players put up a good performance to collect points and qualify for the Super Four.”
“I want my players to continue their form in the next match against Taiwan,” said Sarjit.
It was Malaysia’s 13th win over the Koreans in 37 matches since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Malaysia will face Taiwan in their final group match tomorrow.
Bangladesh had beaten Taiwan 8-3 earlier today.
