The communications ministry has no interest in creating a code of ethics or specific regulations for the podcasting industry, says its deputy minister Teo Nie Ching.
In a podcast recorded at KL Podfest 2025 in The Campus Ampang today, she said the existing laws were sufficient for the burgeoning industry.
“If you ask me, we don’t need new laws for podcasts. But it will help the industry if podcasters understand their limits,” she said.
Speaking to FMT later, she said it was important for podcasters to start talking about self-regulation, so that more people would be willing to invest in the industry’s trusted names.
“Podcasters, policymakers and brands can come together and talk about self-regulation. That will make this industry sustainable,” she said.
Teo also said that Malaysia’s podcasting industry had huge potential, with the industry growing by over 30% a year worldwide.
