Special op: RTD seizes 6 luxury cars valued at RM1.5mil

BENTONG: The Road Transport Department (RTD) seized six luxury cars valued at an estimated RM1.5 million for various offences during a special operation on the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) near Karak today.

RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said one of the luxury vehicles was found using a fake registration number in an attempt to deceive authorities and evade legal action.

“Inspection revealed that the vehicle’s registration number did not match its official records, raising suspicion that it was intended to avoid enforcement action,” he told a press conference today.

Further investigations showed that the same vehicle also lacked valid road tax and insurance coverage, making it one of the most serious violations detected during the operation.

“Investigations also indicate that the driver’s main motive was to evade detection by the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras,” he added.

Kifli said the offence of using a fake registration number was being investigated under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a minimum fine of RM5,000 and a maximum of RM10,000, in addition to other legal action.

He said that the remaining luxury cars seized during the operation were found to have committed various offences, including driving without a valid licence, road tax, or insurance coverage.

In addition to the luxury vehicles, RTD seized 15 cars, eight high-powered motorcycles, 102 motorcycles below 250cc, a van, and a lorry.

The operation, which ran from 6am to 1pm, resulted in a total of 1,203 summonses for various offences.

“Ops Khas involved collaboration between RTD teams from Pahang, , Negri Sembilan, and headquarters, with support from the police and local authorities. A total of 183 RTD personnel were deployed, with enforcement focused on the LPT1 stretch between Gombak and Karak,” he said.
