Spare parts outlet fined RM35,000 for storing e-waste without licence

SUNGAI PETANI: A spare parts outlet was fined RM35,000 by the Sessions Court here today for storing scheduled electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) without a licence from the Department of Environment (DoE).

The company, which trades in vehicle parts, components, tools and accessories, was found to have kept hazardous e-waste at its premises.

Its director, representing the firm, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Nabisha Ibrahim.

According to case facts, Kedah DoE enforcement officers uncovered the waste during a routine inspection at the outlet in Taman Cindai Jaya on Jan 14.

The charge was framed under Section 18(1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, punishable under Section 18(3), which provides for a fine of between RM25,000 and RM250,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

The company’s director sought leniency, citing it as a first offence.

He said the firm had previously only been compounded RM4,000 under the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005 for improper labelling and storage of used lubricant oil.
