SEOUL, Oct 21 (Bernama-Yonhap) — South Korea and Malaysia signed an agreement Tuesday to mutually recognise the airworthiness certification of their military aircraft, the state arms procurement agency said, in Seoul’s first such deal with an Asian nation, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Under the deal, the two sides will recognise each other’s airworthiness certification of their homegrown military aircraft, according to the Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
Airworthiness is a key measure of a plane’s suitability for safe flight.
South Korea will conduct airworthiness certification for 18 FA-50 light attack fighters set to be supplied to Malaysia, it added.
“The mutual airworthiness recognition deal is anticipated to serve as an occasion to expand exports of homegrown aircraft to Asian countries and help advance the domestic aircraft industry through arms industry cooperation,” DAPA Minister Seok Jong-gun was quoted as saying.
DAPA said it plans to sign more mutual military airworthiness certification deals with countries in Europe, Asia, and Central and South America.
With the latest deal, South Korea has inked mutual agreements on military airworthiness certification with eight countries, including the United States, Poland and Spain.
