SMC Hosts World Heart Day 2025 To Raise Awareness On Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama)  — Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) will host the World Heart Day 2025 celebration on Sept 27, bringing together healthcare professionals, patients, and the community to raise awareness about cardiovascular health, prevention, and early intervention.

In a statement today, SMC said the event will be held at the Sunway Medical Centre Convention Centre from 9 am to 1 pm.

SMC announced that Consultant Cardiologist Dr Richard Chan Tze Ming and Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist Dr Gary Lee Chin Keong will be present to contribute their extensive expertise in managing coronary artery disease, hypertension, and heart failure.

They will conduct awareness sessions on prevention, lifestyle changes, and monitoring of key vascular health indicators, such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels.

“Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality globally. Conditions like coronary artery disease, hypertension, and heart failure and all part of CVDs, are often silent until they become life-threatening.

“In line with the global World Heart Day movement, SMC’s initiative seeks to open its doors to the public with access to education, screenings, and inspiring real-life patient experiences,” the statement read.

The event will also feature patient testimonials from beneficiaries of the Skim Jantung Negeri heart scheme, who will share their treatment and recovery journeys at SMC.

“Additionally, there will be a workshop on the use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and emergency response, highlighting essential skills for handling cardiac emergencies.

“There will also be interactive health booths, health screenings, and a demonstration by Samsung Malaysia Electronics on the role of wearable technology in monitoring heart health.

“These activities aim to enrich the event by enabling attendees to better understand cardiovascular risk factors and explore practical tools for daily self-monitoring,” it added.

CVDs remain a leading cause of death globally and in Malaysia. In 2022, the World Health Organisation reported 19.8 million deaths from CVDs, accounting for 32 percent of all global deaths, predominantly from heart attacks and strokes.

This issue is reflected in Malaysia, where the Ministry of Health recorded 66,779 CVD-related deaths in 2021, highlighting the critical need for greater public awareness focusing on risk factors, prevention, and early detection.

Meanwhile, in the same statement, SMC’s Senior Director of Business Development and Corporate Communications, Tan Mei Shin, said that heart disease is not just a statistic but a reality faced by countless families in Malaysia and around the world.

“With greater awareness and preventive action, many of these lives can be protected. World Heart Day is about reminding us to listen to our hearts, literally and figuratively and to make health a priority,” she said.
