GEORGE TOWN: A sinkhole measuring appeared along Jalan Burmah near Komtar on Sunday (September 21), causing traffic congestion in the city.
The sinkhole, measuring about 1.5m wide and 2.5 m long, is big enough to wreck a car wheel or flip a motorbike.
Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said the incident, which occurred at about 9am, is believed to have been caused by a burst underground sewage pipe.
“Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has deployed its contractors to fix the leak and repair the road,” he said.
He added that officers from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) were on-site to manage traffic.
“To divert traffic, MBPP officers are stationed at the scene.
We expect work to be done soon and traffic to resume,” he said, assuring that no major safety risks have been reported.
Teh also noted that the swift response by repair teams helped prevent any mishap.
