SIBU: Police have taken down more than 100 illegal money-lending advertisements during a special operation targeting unlicensed loan activities in the district.
Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the district Commercial Crime Investigation Division carried out Op Vulture on Friday (Aug 8) after complaints from the public were received.
He issued the statement on Saturday (August 9).
“During the operation, 112 advertising banners were removed from traffic lights and lamp posts along Jalan Sungai Antu, Jalan Wong Ting Hock, Jalan Igan, Jalan Teng Chin Hua and Jalan Serai,” said ACP Zulkipli.
He said five police reports were lodged over the removal of banners suspected of promoting unlicensed moneylending.
ACP Zulkipli said that this is part of ongoing efforts to eradicate unlicensed moneylenders linked to financial fraud and extortion against borrowers.
He said anyone involved in such activities could face action under the Moneylenders Act 1951 (Act 400) and also urged the public to ignore dubious adverts in public spaces and to report suspicious notices directly to the police.
