KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian rapper Namewee has denied allegations of drug use and possession in connection with the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh.
In an Instagram post, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, said he is confident that the truth will emerge once the police investigation is complete in two to three months.
“I did not take drugs, nor did I possess any. At most, I’ve just been drinking a little more lately. Those who believe me will continue to do so, and those who don’t, won’t.
“Either way, when the police report is released in about two or three months, the truth will speak for itself.
“I haven’t responded earlier because the case is still under investigation, and we are not allowed to disclose any details.
“Over the past few days, we’ve also been subjected to blackmail. If they want to keep playing this game, we’re ready to see it through,” he wrote.
Earlier today, Sin Chew Daily reported that Wee had been linked to the death of a Taiwanese influencer known to her fans as the “Nurse Goddess.”
Her manager, identified only as Chris, said Hsieh died of a heart attack in Malaysia on Oct 30.
According to the report, Namewee had tested positive for four drug components and was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court on Oct 24 for drug use and possession.
Checks on the court’s e-filing system confirmed that Wee was charged on the same date.
Wee said he decided to respond after seeing another “baseless and speculative” news report about the case.
He also extended his condolences and regret over Hsieh’s death, adding that the delay in emergency response had compounded the tragedy.
“The ambulance took nearly an hour to arrive — I honestly don’t know what the point of calling 999 is anymore. When I called to ask, I even got scolded,” he said.
