KUALA LUMPUR: The National Film Development Corporation (Finas), the organiser of the 34th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM34), has promised transparent judging for all finalists across the 27 contested categories.
Finas Chairman Datuk Hans Isaac confirmed that there was no interference from any party in the process of selecting the final candidates, or the ‘Top 5’, with full responsibility given to a professional jury panel.
Hans explained that Finas’ role was simply as a facilitator to ensure the smooth running of the event.
“Finas’ role as a facilitator is in ensuring that the implementation of FFM34 runs smoothly,” he said following the recent announcement of the Top 5 candidates.
Hans also noted that competition this year was stiff due to the significant increase in the quality of films.
“There are indeed many great films in addition to the list of blockbusters. The quality of production and acting has proven that our films are improving on the whole,” he said.
Regarding the jury, Hans said their identities could not yet be revealed as the selection process for the 27 categories was still ongoing.
“The jury can only be announced on the grand finals night, which is Nov 8, to maintain transparency,” he said.
Five films—Blood Brothers: Bara Naga, Soloz Game of Life, Takluk: Lahad Datu, Reversi, and Babah—have been announced as the Top 5 Best Film candidates.
Produced by Skop Productions and Primeworks Studios (PWS), Blood Brothers has dominated FFM34 with 13 nominations in 11 categories.
The producer of the Best Film winner will receive a Creative Content Fund (DKK) grant of RM1 million.
