#SHOWBIZ: Babah, Blood Brothers win big in 34th Malaysian Film Festival


KUALA LUMPUR: Babah, a moving family story about a deaf father and his paralysed daughter won Best Film at the 34th Malaysia Film Festival (FFM 34).

The film’s production company Nads Media Entertainment received a Creative Content Fund (DKK) grant worth RM1 million and a trophy.

8TV sitcom Blogger Boy actor Qi Razali’s heartfelt performance as the deaf parent earned him his first Best Actor award.

Sweet Qismina’s outstanding performance as Qi’s seriously ill daughter earned her a first Best Actress award.

Babah also won the Most Promising Director award for Mohd Shah Faizul, Best Screenplay for Wan Rafiq and Best Original Story for Nadiah Nadzri.

Action-packed Blood Brothers: Bara Naga also won big at the event, held at Auditorium Seri Angkasa in Angkasapuri Kota Media here tonight.

The movie co-produced by Skop Productions and Primeworks Studios and directed by Syafiq Yusof and Abhilash Chandra claimed six awards.

Syafiq and Abhilash were honoured with the Best Director title, and the film also won awards for Best Supporting Actors (Syazwan Zulkifly and Syafiq Kyle), Best Theme Song, Best Stunt Direction, Best Cinematography and the Special Box Office Award.

The film’s box office achievement of more than RM70 million was achieved in collaboration with Media Prima Bhd as its promotional partner.

The awards were presented by Communications Minister Datuk Fadzil.

Also present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman, National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, Finas CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib and Federation of Malaysian Film Associations (GAFEMA) president Pansha.

Ellie Suriaty Omar’s powerful role in Telaga Suriram secured her the Best Supporting Actress award.

In the newcomer categories, Amir Ahnaf was named Most Promising Actor for Kahar: Kapla High Council, and Michelle Lungan took home the Most Promising Actress award for her role in Tegkang.

Young actress Puteri Rafasya won Best Child Actress for Telaga Suriram.

The Best Documentary award was presented to Saranghae (Rastech Worldwide), while Rindu Tak Berpenghujung (Media Prima Bhd) won Best Short Film.

Special Jury Awards went to Ejen Ali The Movie 2 and Takluk: Lahad Datu.

Veteran actor Datuk Ahmad Tarmimi Siregar was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the film industry.

The country’s Father of Animation Hassan Muthalib was awarded the Special Artiste Award for his services to Malaysian animation.

This year’s festival received 90 entries, spanning 41 feature films, 26 short films, and 23 documentaries.

The star-studded event, hosted by versatile artiste Datuk Afdlin Shauki and actress Che Puan Sarimah Ibrahim, featured performances by prominent Malaysian singers and musicians, including Tony Eusoff, Nadia Aqilah, MK, Noki, Shila Amzah, Zizi Kirana, Mohar, Man Bai and Misha Omar.

The award presenters included Pansha, Farid Kamil, Nadia Brian, Datuk Jurey Latif Rosli, Sandra Lim, Aedy Ashraf, Ikmal Amry, Azira Shafinaz, Sweet Qismina, Trisha Ooi, Amerul Affendi and Syafie Naswip.

FFM34 with the theme Karya Kreatif, Sinema Dinamik was broadcast live on TV2.
