Shin Peng wins world wushu gold for Malaysia


KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu exponent Si Shin Peng has delivered an unexpected gold medal at the World Championships in Brasilia, Brazil.

The 23-year-old, world championships debutant, scored 9.756 points in the final on Thursday.

Kuong Chi Hin of Macau clinched the silver with 9.743 points with Japan’s Araki Motoyoshi settling for bronze with 9.740 points.

It is the first gold medal for Malaysia in the biennial world meet, which is taking place in the South America continent for the first time.

Malaysian wushu queen Tan Cheong Min, who captured silver in the women’s nandao event on Wednesday, had to settle for 10th place in the nanquan event (9.623).

Meanwhile, Sydney Chin just missed out on a second medal for Malaysia after placing fourth in the women’s taijiquan event (9.733).

Malaysia have won one gold, one silver and one bronze after two days of competition. Lee Jia Rong contributed the first medal for Malaysia after taking bronze in the women’s gunshu event.
