KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor recorded the highest number of juvenile crime cases out of more than 5,633 incidents nationwide between 2023 and June this year, with offenders aged 16 to 18 making up the majority.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said police recorded 2,006 cases in 2023, 2,442 in 2024 and 1,185 up to June 2025.
“Statistics by age group of juvenile offenders for the period 2023 to June 2025 show that those aged between 16 and 18 accounted for the highest number of cases at 3,637, while the lowest involved offenders aged seven to 10, with 21 cases,” he said in a parliamentary written reply.
Saifuddin also provided a breakdown of cases by state, with Selangor topping the list at 892 cases, followed by Johor (731), Perak (506), Sabah (474), Sarawak (460), Kedah (433), Kelantan (347) and Pahang (331).
Other states included Kuala Lumpur (315), Penang (294), Terengganu (275), Negri Sembilan (241), Melaka (218) and Perlis (116).
He was responding to Zahir Hassan (PH-Wangsa Maju), who had asked about the latest juvenile crime figures under the Child Act 2001, including detailed data.
Zahir had also sought information on strategies to strengthen enforcement of Section 33 of the Act, which prevents underage youths from loitering unsupervised at night.
Saifuddin said several preventive measures had been put in place by police, including public awareness programmes, continuous monitoring of high-risk areas, and crime prevention patrols by the mobile patrol vehicle and motorcycle patrol unit (URB).
“These efforts are complemented by the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol campaign, which encourages public participation in crime prevention through the sharing of information with police,” he said.
