KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor government has expressed its gratitude to the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, for the Ruler’s concern over the pig farming issue in Kuala Langat.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in a statement, said the State Executive Council had decided to strengthen operational requirements for pig farms in Selangor, with priority given to more responsible waste management to prevent negative impacts on drainage systems.
He said the decision was made after considering all aspects, including the views of technical agencies, to resolve a matter that has persisted for more than a decade.
“Besides safeguarding public sensitivities, this initiative is important to protect community health, the environment and the drainage system, while preventing odour pollution so the industry can operate more safely without adverse effects,” he said.
Amirudin added that the measures, as outlined by Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim during a press conference on Jan 8, were part of a more structured and comprehensive initiative to manage the sensitive issue prudently and effectively.
Earlier today, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed deep disappointment and disagreement with the Selangor government’s decision to allow pig farming operations to continue in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, from this year, ahead of their proposed relocation to Bukit Tagar in 2030.
The Ruler said he did not agree with the proposal to designate Kuala Langat as a temporary pig farming site before relocation to Bukit Tagar, warning that pollution problems that have plagued the area for the past 16 years could worsen.
He also voiced concern over Kuala Langat, which is home to a large Malay population, noting that longstanding issues linked to pig farming in the area have yet to be fully resolved since 2010.
Amirudin said Izham is scheduled to have an audience with Sultan Sharafuddin on Jan 12 to brief and present details of the exco decision, including proactive steps by enforcement agencies to strengthen safety and cleanliness of the surrounding environment without compromise.
Amirudin said the state government would continue to uphold the Sultan’s guidance, advice and leadership.
