KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has reminded Malaysians to exercise their freedom of speech responsibly and within the boundaries of the law.
He said while freedom of speech is guaranteed under the Federal Constitution, it must be practised with wisdom and decorum, and not misused to spread slander or accusations that could divide society and tarnish the dignity of others.
“The spirit of unity and harmony among races, religions and cultures must always be preserved,” the ruler said in a Facebook post in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day celebration tomorrow.
The ruler also urged citizens to remain loyal to the nation and respect leaders chosen through the democratic process, as this was vital to ensuring national stability and prosperity.
In his National Day message, Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that Malaysians, especially the people of Selangor, should reflect on the true meaning of independence, a hard-won freedom secured by national heroes who sacrificed their lives, sweat and tears to liberate the country from colonial rule.
“Independence is not merely symbolic or confined to annual celebrations, but a profound trust that must be safeguarded by every Malaysian with responsibility, unity and a strong national spirit,” he said.
He also reminded the people to foster the spirit of brotherhood regardless of differences, besides appreciating the peace and independence the nation enjoys today.
He also called on the people to uphold loyalty, respect and responsibility, strengthen personal, family and national development, and to live by the principles of the Rukun Negara.
