SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — The government is implementing immediate safety measures at the Bandar Utama secondary school where a 16-year-old student was fatally stabbed by a schoolmate on Tuesday.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state is working with the Education Ministry, police, and parents to restore confidence in school safety following the tragedy.

The immediate measures include deploying metal detectors at the school, expanding CCTV coverage, and introducing a smart notification system to improve communication between teachers and parents.

In addition, Amirudin said the state will hold a memorial gathering for parents, teachers, and students to honour the victim and help the community process the trauma.

The move comes as student attendance has reportedly dropped in recent days while the school community grieves.

Amirudin stressed that his government’s priority is to ensure schools are once again seen as the safest places for children and to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.

On Oct 14, 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen died after she was allegedly stabbed by a 14-year-old schoolmate.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene and has since been remanded by the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court.
