KLANG: The state government has successfully eradicated hardcore poverty through proactive measures by immediately identifying those affected, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Mentri Besar said that he receives a list of those involved every six months, ensuring they remain connected with aid instruments like the Sejahtera Living Assistance (Bingkas) and zakat (tithe).

“The state government has invested significantly to eliminate hardcore poverty. Initially, we identified 700 individuals, and this number has reduced to 300.

“… this involves financial aid where, for those needing RM400, we supplement it with zakat funds and assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for Muslims, while non-Muslims receive aid from the state government and JKM,” he said after attending the Selangor state-level Deepavali celebration 2025 here on Friday (Oct 17).

Amirudin mentioned that the administration’s current focus is on ending poverty in Selangor through planned methods, which will be detailed in the Selangor Budget 2026.

The State Development Action Council Meeting identified nearly 2,000 individuals on the verge of hardcore poverty due to being bedridden or facing serious issues.

“Even though these individuals have not yet fallen into the hardcore poverty category, we will try to address their problems to prevent them from entering this category. We will also help them exit poverty, which is why we will include measures in the budget.

“The discipline remains the same; every six months, we receive a report, and we will help them out with existing aid. For those who are bedridden or unable to work, we will assist them before they fall into absolute poverty or at least enable them to maintain a basic living,” he said. – Bernama
