KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Customs Department has foiled an attempt to smuggle hazardous electronic waste (e-waste) involving 25 containers, with an estimated total value, including duties and taxes, exceeding RM3.06 million.
Some of the containers had previously been inspected by authorities in Johor in early June 2025, during which the Department of Environment (DoE) ordered the consignment to be returned to its country of origin.
However, the containers were later transited through a neighbouring country and re-shipped to Port Klang on Aug 25 by the shipping agent.
Selangor Customs director Mohamad Azhar Ahmad Paharazi said the seizure was made under Operation Demeter, an international customs enforcement operation initiated by the World Customs Organization (WCO), targeting hazardous waste commodities such as e-waste and plastic waste regulated under the Basel Convention.
