KENINGAU: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a Sabah Electricity staff member feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents at Kampung Nuntunan Apin-apin last night has been expanded by authorities.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Fire Superintendent Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said the operation had been extended up to five kilometres downstream.
He added that the search also covered up to 1.5km upstream towards the Quarry Mili Hasil area in Kampung Kadalakan.
The operation, he said, faced difficulties as the aluminium boat could not pass through several locations due to the shallow and rocky river conditions.
“Besides that, the fire and rescue team also carried out searches along the riverbanks on foot and using four-wheel-drive vehicles at several locations,” he said when contacted.

During the 9.30pm incident, the victim, a man in his 30s, and two of his colleagues had earlier carried out maintenance work at a substation near a suspension bridge.
They then attempted to cross a concrete bridge in the area but were suddenly hit by strong currents, causing panic among the three.
A rescue team comprising 9 firefighters, along with a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, was deployed to the location.
