JAKARTA, Aug 23 (Bernama) — Malaysia’s Nur Andrina Zainuddin overcame an alleged false start to win the women’s 200-metre event at the SEA Deaf Games 2025 here today.
The dramatic victory at the Student Sports Training Centre in Ragunan, South Jakarta, crowned Nur Andrina as the undisputed sprint queen of the Games, as she had won the 100m title yesterday with a time of 13.06s.
Nur Andrina was initially flashed the ‘red card’ and barred from running for allegedly making a false start.
However, an official protest by the Malaysian delegation was accepted by the technical committee, and she was allowed to ‘rerun’ the race alone.
The 20-year-old athlete made the most of the second chance by clocking 27.63 seconds to deliver a gold medal for Malaysia. Her winning time also broke the meet record of 30.15s set by teammate Alinda Anastasia.
Alinda clinched the silver with a time of 28.83s, while Indonesia’s Selly Dwi Juniarti took bronze in 29.12s.
“I really followed the green light, so when they said I started early, I was very emotional.
“Alhamdulillah, after the protest was accepted and I was given another chance, I managed to prove myself and win gold,” said an emotional Nur Andrina through an interpreter after crossing the finish line.
She expressed gratitude to her loved ones for their unwavering support.
“I dedicate this victory to my parents, teachers and coaches. They gave me so much encouragement — without them, I wouldn’t have reached this level. My parents back in Malaysia even cried when they heard I won gold,” she said.
The dramatic incident added colour to Malaysia’s campaign at the Games, with proud cheers echoing around the Ragunan track after the national anthem Negaraku was played and passionately rendered in sign language.
