KUCHING, Sept 14 (Bernama) — Sarawak’s enduring racial and religious harmony is an invaluable asset that must be preserved for future generations, while its youth must step up to drive the state’s continued development, said Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He said Sarawak’s strength lies not only in its cultural diversity and unity, but also in preparing a skilled, forward-thinking generation to lead its economic transformation.
Wan Junaidi noted that Sarawak’s social cohesion, reflected in shared celebrations of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai Dayak, Chinese New Year and Christmas, has made the state a global model of tolerance.
“I urge all Sarawakians to uphold this legacy by embracing patriotism, appreciating differences and cultivating mutual respect,” he said in his Malaysia Day 2025 message issued here today.
He added that this year’s themes, ‘Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni’ at the national level and ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur Dalam Malaysia’ at the state level, reflect the government’s commitment to people-centric development, grounded in humanity, social well-being and justice.
He called on Sarawakians to embrace the spirit of Malaysia MADANI by accelerating economic growth, strengthening social stability and ensuring inclusive prosperity.
Wan Junaidi stressed that Sarawak’s future, particularly in emerging sectors, education and infrastructure, depends on youth engagement and readiness.
He urged young Sarawakians to align their education and skills with the state’s development priorities to meet workforce demands and contribute to a sustainable economy.
“I want to see Sarawak’s youth actively involved in all state government initiatives, pursuing relevant fields of study and becoming the skilled workforce needed to ensure the success and sustainability of our new economy,” he said.
According to Wan Junaidi, Sarawak is on track to achieve RM282 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030 under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, with state revenue reaching RM14.2 billion in 2024, up from RM5.6 billion in 2017.
He added that Sarawak’s total trade reached RM193.4 billion in 2024, making it Malaysia’s fourth-largest contributor to national exports, led by petroleum products and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
He emphasised that Sarawak’s progress relies on strategic cooperation among the government, private sector and the people, along with continued political stability and social unity.
“Just as a ship needs a capable captain and crew, effective leadership requires wisdom and teamwork. With unity and shared purpose, Sarawak will continue charting its course toward excellence, not only in Malaysia but on the global stage,” he said.
