Sabah women turn their attention to Asian football stage

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah FA women’s team head coach Bobby Gonzales said it has been a challenging but rewarding season after they claimed the 2025 National Women’s League title.

Despite losing 1-0 to in their last match at the KLFA Stadium on Sunday, Sabah still clinched the national title.

“This year, we managed to reclaim the league championship,” said Bobby whose Sabah last won the league in 2023.

“The journey was tough. We started training in late February, expecting the league to kick off in April, but it was postponed to June. Despite a long preparation period and budget challenges, the result was worth it.

“Even though we’re champions, I was still disappointed not to finish the season unbeaten. Football is like that, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. We tried to stay focused, but a few players were unwell, and it showed,” he said.

Looking ahead to the AFC Women’s Champions League, Bobby outlined plans to regroup and strengthen the squad for the Asian-level challenge.

The Sabah team will take a short break before resuming preparations early next year, with player selections and potential imports to fully utilise the six-player quota allowed by the competition.
