KOTA BARU: PAS has confirmed that the party will contest five seats in the 17th Sabah state election.
Its vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah said the candidate selection process is now at its final stage, with preparations underway in the identified constituencies.
“I was informed that PAS will contest five seats, and one of them is the Karambunai state constituency.
“Sabah PAS Commissioner Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan, himself will be contesting as the area is considered to have a high winning potential,” he told a press conference at Kota Darulnaim here on Wednesday.
He said the latest discussions indicate that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is expected to contest a total of 40 seats in the Sabah election, although the official announcement will only be made on Nov 11.
He said that all candidates will contest under the Perikatan logo.
Meanwhile, Mohd Amar said PAS is confident that Perikatan can offer renewal and a fresh image to the people of Sabah after years of grappling with various issues plaguing the state.
“Perikatan’s approach in Sabah is to bring reform and genuine change. The biggest issue in Sabah is corruption and allocation matters, not because there are no funds, but because they do not reach the people,” he said.
As for campaign operations, he said PAS machinery from Peninsular Malaysia will be mobilised to ensure a Perikatan victory.
The Election Commission has set Nov 29 as the polling day for the 17th Sabah election, with the nomination date set for Nov 15 and the early voting date for Nov 25.
