Sabah federal road maintenance prioritised by critical damage level

Maintenance work on Sabah’s federal roads will be based on critical damage assessments to reduce long-term costs, says deputy minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: Maintenance work on federal roads in Sabah will be carried out based on the critical level of damage identified through a comprehensive assessment.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the assessment was important to ensure maintenance costs could be reduced in the long run.

He stated the Works Ministry remains committed to ensuring Sabah’s roads are properly maintained according to the annual allocation.

The ministry is aware of urgent financial and technical needs in some Sabah districts.

Efforts are underway to review and provide necessary allocations for ongoing and future maintenance projects.

Ahmad confirmed these projects would be completed on schedule during his winding-up speech for the Supply Bill 2026.

The government is adopting new paving technology to improve road surface quality and durability.

This technology ensures longer lifespan for road pavements throughout Sabah.

The Sabah Public Works Department will identify main routes requiring immediate attention.

Priority work includes pothole patching and installation of streetlights and road safety signs.

Regarding the Rantau Panjang-Sungai Kolok bridge project, Ahmad said it is at the tender document preparation stage.

The bridge connecting and Thailand is expected to be tendered in December.

The East Coast Expressway Phase 3 project will be implemented through privatisation.

This public-private partnership method will not involve government financial allocation.

The project will use a competitive bidding process called Request For Proposal.

The Works Ministry has submitted project documentation to the Public-Private Partnership Unit for review.

Government priority remains completing the Central Spine Road and Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai Expressway projects.
