KOTA KINABALU: Sabah BN has proposed the construction of a new international airport in the state.
The project, expected to be completed within the next 10 to 15 years, aims to increase capacity to accommodate the rising number of passengers and cargo.
The new airport will be supported by modern infrastructure and a contemporary transportation ecosystem to ensure accessibility, efficiency, and competitiveness.
“Its implementation is expected to become a key catalyst for Sabah’s future economic growth, tourism and international trade,” the manifesto said.
Currently, Sabah has international airports in Tawau and Sandakan.
The manifesto has also proposed a new Kudat Port and the establishment of a Free Trade Zone (FTZ).
“With such proposals, it would help Sabah to emerge as a strategic Maritime Economic Hub, connecting Southeast Asia with global markets,” the manifesto added.
Sabah’s position along major trade routes between East Asia and Southeast Asia makes Kudat the “Northern Gateway” for BIMP-EAGA, strengthening trade networks, attracting foreign investment, stimulating export industries and creating quality job opportunities for the people of Sabah.
