Russian Nuclear Submarines Conduct Missile Launches In Sea Of Okhotsk

VLADIVOSTOK (Russia), Sept. 19 (Bernama-Xinhua) — Two nuclear-powered submarines of Russia’s Pacific Fleet have successfully launched cruise missiles during naval exercises in the Sea of Okhotsk, Xinhua reported.

The multi-purpose submarines Krasnoyarsk and Omsk fired Oniks and Granit cruise missiles at a designated sea target located more than 250 kilometres away, the fleet’s press service said in a statement on Friday.

The monitoring data showed that all three missiles hit the target directly. Surface ships and naval aviation units of the Pacific Fleet were deployed to secure the test area during the launches.

The missile firing was part of a command-and-staff exercise held by the Joint Command of Forces in Russia’s northeast since Sept. 12. The drills focused on protecting sea lanes in the northern Pacific Ocean as well as defending the coastlines of the Kamchatka and Chukotka regions and nearby island territories.

The fleet said the exercise was conducted under the Russian navy’s training plan and served as the final stage of combat training for the summer period.
