Radio Televisyen Malaysia has suspended the airing of the animated series “Santiago of the Seas” to conduct a review of its content, following public feedback over its 22nd episode, broadcast on TV2 yesterday.
The broadcaster said earlier internal assessments and content evaluations did not detect any behaviour or scenes suggesting same-sex relationships or elements linked to them.
“However, to ensure there are no elements that may raise concerns or sensitivity among viewers, RTM has halted the series to carry out a comprehensive review of its entire content,” it said in a statement today.
RTM said it remains committed to ensuring all broadcast materials adhere to ethical standards and do not cause discomfort to any party.
Earlier today, PAS Ulama Council information chief Nor Hamzah called for the series – a children’s series about a group of young pirates – to be taken off the air, claiming it contains indirect LGBT elements that could influence young viewers.
He said the government must intervene immediately to prevent what PAS views as “harmful content” from reaching young children.
