SHAH ALAM: An internal investigation will examine Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s (RTM) recent mistake of misidentifying several Asean leaders during its live broadcast of the 47th Asean Summit’s opening ceremony on Sunday (Oct 26), says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
RTM had mistakenly identified the leaders of Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia during the telecast.
The national broadcaster later issued an apology to the parties affected for the error, according to a news report.
“There may be elements of governance or disciplinary issues involved, which we will refer to the relevant committee to handle,” said Fahmi during a press conference at Shah Alam on Saturday (Nov 1).
“I have contacted my colleague from Indonesia, Meutya Hafid (Communications and digital affairs minister), to give her an explanation on the issue and apologise as well.
“She accepted the apology, and I have given her a letter to tell that this will not happen again.
Fahmi added that the ministry was carrying out the investigation.
During the same press conference, Fahmi stated he remains neutral regarding former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin’s (KJ) plans to rejoin Umno, noting that he has not received any confirmation about this.
“I’m not sure if he really wants to join. In the end, it’s an individual option to join any party,” he said during the conference.
“We are neutral and currently focused on making Malaysia an attractive destination for major investors, as our Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim mentioned in parliament,” he said
According to a Malay language daily, the radio presenter has already received the “blessing” of the party’s top leadership, particularly its president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
