RTD extends weekend hours to help drivers renew licences ahead of RM1.99 RON95 subsidy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will extend its operating hours on weekends to help the public renew their driving licences following the launch of the Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95) subsidy programme.

The initiative, announced earlier today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim, is set to take effect on Sept 30.

Under the programme, RON95 petrol will be sold at RM1.99 per litre for all Malaysians with a valid driving licence.

Starting from Sept 27 to Oct 26, the counters at all RTD offices and branches will open from 8.30am to 4.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the move is to provide greater flexibility for people who cannot visit during weekdays to renew their licences.

“For the record, a total of 2.3 million Competent Driving Licence (CDL) holders are currently inactive, meaning their licences have expired for more than three years, while 15.2 million CDL holders remain active,” he said in a statement today.

He reminded those whose CDLs have expired for more than three years that they must retake the Driver’s Education Curriculum Parts 2 and 3 tests (KPP 02 and KPP 03) at a driving institute to get their licences back.

For those whose licences have expired for less than three years, he urged them to renew them immediately via the MyJPJ app, mySikap portal, or kiosks, without needing to appear at the counter.

He said the RTD is confident the initiative will help the public make full use of the government’s programme while improving road safety through the enforcement of valid driving licences.
