KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is set to expand its use of body-worn cameras for its enforcement officers nationwide this year.
Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said they were in the process of procuring additional units, which will be distributed to all its state offices.
“Following a positive initial rollout that began in October last year, the department estimates more than 300 units will be added, with the total possibly reaching 500 units this year.
“The cameras help reassure the public regarding the integrity of officers while recording all movements and activities of enforcement personnel, as well as any issues that arise on the ground,” he said when met during his official visit to Media Prima Bhd’s Balai Berita, here.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur RTD director Hamidi Adam and Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan.
In Oct last year, it was reported that the RTD had begun equipping its enforcement officers with body-worn cameras (BWC) and new pistols as part of efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and safety during operations.
Aedy had said that the introduction of the technology marked a major step forward in modernising enforcement, ensuring officers’ safety and preserving evidence in the event of disputes during field operations.
The initial rollout last year saw 100 units of the cameras, which were distributed in stages to RTD state offices, with priority given to headquarters personnel who frequently participate in joint and high-risk operations.
