RTD cracks down on 'kereta sapu' at Penang International Airport

BAYAN LEPAS: The Penang Road Transport Department launched a special enforcement operation, Op Ulat, aimed at tackling illegal car hire services at the Penang International Airport.

The operation targeted individuals offering unlicensed passenger transport services, commonly known as “kereta sapu”, and involved private vehicles being used for the purpose.

Three private vehicles — a Toyota Vellfire, Hyundai Starex and Toyota Inova — were seized during the operation.

According to a statement on its Facebook page, the Penang RTD said these vehicles were found to be operating without valid operator licences and were charging passengers according to their destinations.

“The vehicles were confiscated under Section 80(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010) and the owners were probed under Section 16 of the same act. Under Section 16 of the APAD 2010, offenders face a fine ranging from RM1,000 to RM10,000, or imprisonment for up to one year, or both,” it said.

The state RTD said such crackdowns would continue, with stern action to be taken against drivers or vehicle owners involved in offering illegal or unlicensed car hire services.
