Malaysia’s surprise mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing’s remarkable run at the Macau Open ended in the final today after losing to Denmark’s Alexandra Boje-Mathias Christiansen.
The world No 127 duo, who were paired off only five months ago, lost 12-21, 16-21 to the more experienced Danes in 44 minutes.
Jimmy-Pei Jing take home US$14,060 (RM60,188) as runners-up in the BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
Despite the loss, the Malaysians have created a record for themselves, having reached their first World Tour finals.
The duo were paired off in March after Pei Jing’s split with her regular partner, Tan Kian Meng, who had retired.
Jimmy-Pei Jing’s giant-killing feats in the tournament included victories over second seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China in the quarter-finals, and India’s world No 18 pair Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto in the round of 16.
