SHAH ALAM:

RON95 petrol will be sold at a subsidised rate of RM2.05 per litre for eligible commercial vehicles, says finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan.

This is six sen higher than the rate of RM1.99 per litre for the public but still lower than the unsubsidised price.

Amir said this will extend to nine segments of public transport and 12 under the logistics sector.

They are:

  •  Public transport – Taxis, rental cars, school buses, hearses, ambulances, fire trucks, shuttle buses, mini buses and stage buses.
  • Logistics – Panel vans, window vans, semi-panel vans, food catering trucks, food catering vans, vans providing mobile services, box trucks, refrigerated trucks, and trucks that provide mobile services as well as ferry general cargo, agriculture produce, and animals.

He added that fleet cards will be used to channel this targeted subsidy to the eligible commercial vehicles.

The price of RON95 petrol will be lowered from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre for the public effective Sept 30 under the Budi Madani RON95 programme.

Citizens aged 16 and above with an active driving licence are eligible for the subsidised rate, with verification done via MyKad, the same mechanism used for the distribution of Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid.

Each Malaysian is entitled to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 petrol per month, although e-hailing services are exempted from this limit.

Under the new system, non-citizens and ineligible individuals will have to pay the unsubsidised market rate.

Amir said the government will hold a “trial run” of sorts of the mechanism on Saturday, starting with members of the police force and armed forces.

This will be followed by recipients of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) aid scheme on Sept 28, and then the rest of the public on Sept 30.

He said this is aimed at reducing congestion at petrol stations and appealed to the public to be patient as the initiative is implemented.
