ROG Xbox Ally series: More powerful, more battery life, better grip

Before we dive into the specs and features of the ROG Xbox Ally series, let’s first talk about their design. Each model is only available in one colour option — the ROG Xbox Ally in white and the ROG Xbox Ally X in black. With that out of the way, let us focus on the more affordable ROG Xbox Ally first, as well as the common features you get across both devices.
Asus says it has redesigned the chassis of the ROG Xbox Ally series, pulling over some of the goodies from Microsoft’s own Xbox Wireless Controllers. For instance, you get contoured grips with new palm rest designs and texturing patterns as standard across the range. This should translate into a more comfortable grip, preventing finger cramps during extended gaming sessions.

Up front, both consoles feature the same 7″ 1080p IPS LCD display with a peak brightness of 500 nits. Laid out in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus and offers a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. AMD’s FreeSync Premium is also supported here, making gameplay smoother by syncing the monitor’s refresh rate with the GPU.
Powering the “base” ROG Xbox Ally is AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 A processor, which, when compared to the previous-gen ROG Ally, is said to offer a performance boost of up to 20% when playing titles such as Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War: Reloaded.

This chipset is paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM and 512GB of M.2 2280 SSD storage. Battery life is said to be improved by up to 110% as compared to the original ROG Ally X, thanks to the 60Wh cell on the ROG Xbox Ally.
Included with a 65W charger out of the box, both the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X run on Windows 11, along with a special optimised Xbox software and Asus’ Armoury Crate Special Edition OS up top. The devices also come with a dedicated physical Xbox button that provides access to customisable widgets via Game Bar.

In terms of I/O ports, the ROG Xbox Ally offers:
- 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C (with DisplayPort 2.1 / Power Delivery 3.0)
- 1x UHS-II microSD card reader
- 1x 3.5mm combo audio jack
- Supports SD, SDXC, and SDHC
For connectivity, you get WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
ROG Xbox Ally X: Here are the extras you get

By paying more for the ROG Xbox Ally X, you get the more powerful AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset, which, when compared to the original ROG Ally X, is said to deliver a performance increase of up to 30% when playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Age. With a more powerful chipset, you also get more RAM and storage — 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM and 1TB of M.2 2280 SSD storage.
Interestingly, the ROG Xbox Ally X is also included with an onboard NPU. Asus says this will allow the console to take advantage of AI features when they roll out with supported games in the future.

Battery size on the ROG Xbox Ally X has also been bumped to 80Wh, granting the console twice the battery life over its predecessor when playing Hollow Knight: Silksong.
As for I/O ports, here are the varieties you get with the ROG Xbox Ally X:
- 1x USB 4 with DisplayPort 2.1 / Power Delivery 3.0, Thunderbolt 4 compatible
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C with DisplayPort 2.1 / Power Delivery 3.0
- 1x UHS-II microSD card reader (supports SD, SDXC, and SDHC; UHS-I with DDR200 mode)
- 1x 3.5 combo audio jack

Last but not least, the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 A and AI Z2 Extreme chipsets on both devices have been tuned to take advantage of Radeon’s latest software suite for graphical and performance improvements.
This includes AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), as well as AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) frame generation that offers up to 60% better frame rates.
