KUALA LUMPUR: Online gaming platform Roblox has pledged to enhance safety through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and human monitoring.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the company also expressed its willingness to cooperate with the government on data sharing and regulatory compliance, among others.

“We want a digital world that is not only fun, but also builds the right character and values for the next generation,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday, which included a photo of herself with representatives from Roblox.

“Roblox has over 100 million users worldwide, including more than one million in Malaysia. With such a reach, the responsibility to protect young users cannot be taken lightly.

“As the youth and sports minister, and also a mother, I am concerned when I see how some online games can affect children’s behaviour and emotions,” she added.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said on Saturday the government was mulling over banning Roblox and dating app OMI amid rising concerns over safety and negative content.

She said the matter was under discussion, with any final decision expected to take into account Australia’s upcoming regulations on Roblox, which were scheduled to take effect next month.

It was recently reported that a 9-year-old boy slashed his 6-year-old brother with a sharp object at Kampung Parit Nipah in Batu Pahat, Johor, on Oct 27.

The police said the older boy allegedly became upset with his brother after he was interrupted while playing a game on Roblox, causing him to lose all the points he had collected.
