GEORGE TOWN, Oct 13 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang today detained a retired soldier suspected of receiving nearly RM405,000 in bribes from a company owner in return for selling assets belonging to the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) at below market value.

According to a source, the male suspect in his 60s, was arrested at 10am while giving his statement at the Penang MACC office.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident took place in 2015, when the suspect was serving as PVATM’s information chief.

“The suspect is believed to have solicited and received about RM405,000 in bribes from the sale of PVATM assets, namely five apartment units located around Penang.

“He is suspected of receiving the bribe money through fund transfers into his personal bank account, with 12 transactions detected,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
