SHAH ALAM: Umno will continue to push for the release and full pardon of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said one possible step was to bring a resolution appealing for a full pardon before His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
He said the resolution was among the outcomes of the Selangor Umno Veterans Townhall Session, which was also attended by Selangor Umno State Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin here, today.
“…We must express the concern, request and appeal of UMNO members to seek consent for a full pardon for Najib.
“The General Assembly is the highest level that can pass such a resolution on something important. I will also bring this matter forward,” he said when met after the event.
Earlier, in his speech, Ahmad said there were calls among Umno division chiefs for the party to reassess its position in the Unity Government following the High Court’s decision to maintain Najib serving the remainder of his prison sentence at Kajang Prison.
He said the disappointment expressed by the grassroots was not temporary, but stemmed from developments in the case involving the former Umno president.
“I am in a WhatsApp group of division chiefs that is abuzz and discussing this matter because it is not merely emotional, but arises from disappointment over what has happened to Najib,” he said.
